Still Smiling

I sacrificed my youth for true affection;
a love that was never fair.
I sacrificed years finding a connection;
a link that was never there.

I sacrificed my health, in pain;
in suffering that was wasted.
I sacrificed my wealth, no gain;
the money I never tasted.

I sacrifice my desire to learn;
the knowledge I cannot recall.
Lost my freedom to spend as I earn;
no one heard my frantic call.

One thing I did not give up; my glowing
smile mercifully kept my boat rowing.
