Looking back – Rachel

During the month of May 2016 we will be looking back at Poets’ Corner’s first year, together with our Guest Poetry Curators. They will share their own poetry, experiences as curator and favourite poems from the platform with you.

“Words are more than just words. They are like tools that dig deep into your mind and make you smile.” Rachel Arnold on Poets’ Corner

Poet and mixed media artist Rachel Arnold was introduced as the first Guest Poetry Curator at Poets’ Corner in Spring 2015. Rachel’s creative thinking and wealth of experience helped us launch the poetry platform.

Rachel shared her interest in poetry that makes social statements. She said: ‘I found out many poets throughout the ages used their talents to make social statements and stand up and be a voice for human rights. There are many who have done that including John Clare who comes from Northamptonshire like me. A platform like the Leaveners Poets Corner is where many stories can gather, and it will be interesting which poets will reveal themselves.’

Looking back at her experience as Guest Poetry Curator at Poets’ Corner, Rachel writes:

‘It was invigorating to share the experience so closely of poetry with another poet. We were discussing and reading on equal level. I liked making someone else feel good about their poetry. I became more educated by the poetry of the other poets through the digital platform, gaining technical skills in WordPress and from the writing workshops connected to Leaveners.’

In the next blog post we will look back at the poet Rachel chose as Poet of the Month May 2015, the talented Kuli Kohli.
